(no dust jacket) [good sound copy, light wear to extremities, mild age-toning to edges of text block]. "Charles Mason had fought his way to the top in Wall Street. But when he tried to make a business arrangement of his marriage to Nadine Bendicott, her boredom forced her to seek relaxation with Eric Drake, playboy and connnoisseur [sic] of women. Her husband forgave her, and they agreed on a three months' holiday -- she at Aunt Hattie's villa in California, he at the Canadian trout streams. What happened on this matrimonial holiday makes a stirring story that may show many women how to bring happiness out of misunderstanding." ("Many women"!) This was the first novel published under the solo byline of this author, the son of pioneer Hollywood mogul Jesse L. Lasky, who was by this time well established as a screenwriter. It was, however, undoubtedly not the first he had written: in his 1975 memoir "Whatever Happened to Hollywood" there's a terrific passage (pp. 80-82) about his early collaboration with the legendarily prolific writer Jack Buschlen (aka Jack Preston), which describes how they operated in the mid-1930s as a two-man ghost-writing enterprise, cranking out popular/trashy novels for the Macaulay Company under who-knows-how-many pseudonyms. (The two were actually credited as co-authors on a 1934 Macaulay book, "Curtain of Life.") Lasky describes Buschlen/Preston as "an incurable, compulsive, fanatical fiction machine."
