[minor shelfwear, tiny smudge on top edge of text block, previous owner's name and address in blue ink on verso of front endpaer, plus a brief and uncomplimentary editorial comment (in pencil) facing the title page (see Notes); the jacket shows just a touch of wear at a couple of corners, one tiny nick at bottom edge of front panel, remnants of old price sticker on front flap]. (pen and ink drawings) "Seven unusual short stories [that are] frankly off-beat, filled with vitality and odd, vivid people . . . combining brilliant naturalistic dialogue with a sustained narrative, often in a stream-of-consciousness manner." The stories are: the title story; "A Summer for the Dead"; "The Jazz of Angels"; "Pretty on the Bus at Nighttime"; "Miguel"; "Laughter in the Graveyard"; "Weeping in the Chinese Window." The one-time owner of this copy has left her penciled warning for future readers: "Trash -- do *not* read." (I'd be willing to bet she felt the same way about "Midnight Cowboy" when it came along.)
