An introductory piece, "The Young Raymond Chandler," by Jacques Barzun, is followed by the editor's preface, which incorporates a brief account by Chandler himself, taken from his letters, of his early life as a writer, in college and just afterwards. This is number 164 (hand-numbered) of a limited first printing of 499 copies, of which the first 400 were for sale.
