(no dust jacket; in slipcase) [both book and slipcase in flawless condition, except for a couple of infinitesimal scrape marks on the latter (second scanned image)]. (2 black & white photo frontispieces) A collection of Chandler's nascent literary efforts -- 27 poems (1908-1912); eight essays and sketches (1911-1912); four book reviews (1911-1912) -- plus a requiem and two sonnets composed late in his life (1955-1958). An introductory piece, "The Young Raymond Chandler," by Jacques Barzun, is followed by the editor's preface, which incorporates a brief account by Chandler himself, taken from his letters, of his early life as a writer, in college and just afterwards. This is number 164 (hand-numbered) of a limited first printing of 499 copies, of which the first 400 were for sale.
