[moderate shelfwear to book; the jacket is lightly rubbed, with a handful of tiny nicks and tears along the top edge]. INSCRIBED at great length (filling the entire page) and SIGNED by the author on the front endppaer. The title story, basically a novella taking up a little more than half the book, is a fantastic tale (science fiction modern parable you decide!) about a world in which "a rapidly escalating arms race and an even more rapidly deteriorating economy," coupled with rumors of impending war, culminate in what becomes known as "the day of the Great Panic." (Apparently, however, some sort of miracle occurs and all ends well.) The remaining shorter pieces, crammed into the last 40 pages or so of this 124-page vanity press production, deal with: "the world of a tycoon who can't go home again"; "a fantastic Second Coming"; "the psyche of a latter-day Capone"; and "an O. Henry-esque reunion between an elderly schoolteacher and one of her former pupils." Signed by Author
