(quarter-bound, faux leather over paper-covered boards; no dust jacket, probably as issued) [bumping and slight exposure of boards at all tips, small tears at bottom edges of several pages; NOTE that what appears in the scanned image to be a tiny "notch" at the right edge of the front cover is an anomaly introduced by our scanned, not a feature of the book itself]. A compilation of cartoons providing humorous takes on Lockheed's operations, most of which had appeared in their corporate publication, "Lockheed Reports," over a period of five years, "plus a few new ones." (OCLC records no holdings for "Lockheed Reports," so I'm not entirely sure when it commenced publication, or whether it was produced solely for internal distribution or if it had a public-facing function as well; the brief introduction in this volume seems to suggest the latter.) The introduction describes this volume as "a sort of anthology of aviation humour," but as such it's very themed to the company's own products and achievements. The cartoonist, Dick Shaw, explains that rather than attempting a chronological arrangement he has organized the cartoons under these subject headings: Plants and Facilities; Machines and Methods; Research and Developments; Airplanes and Design Features; Field Service Reports; Things to Come. A full-page cartoon introduces each section; otherwise there are anywhere from two to six cartoons per page. Some of the specific airplanes highlighted are: the F-80 Shooting Star Jet Fighter; the T-33 Jet Trainer; the F-94 Starfire All-Weather Interceptor; the P2V Neptune Patrol Bomber; and several Constellation transport models. (NOTE that the publication information is derived from OCLC, as the book itself has no title page, and provides none of the usual bibliographic data; rather weird, coming from an outfit which obviously prided itself on the precision of its engineering.)
