"The City" of the title (although nothing about the book's design betrays this fact) is Los Angeles, and although this book -- the author's first -- has long since ceased to have much practical value, it is an absolutely wonderful snapshot of L.A. in the early 1970's, giving a long-time resident's lowdown on the local traffic, crime, culture, shopping, recreation, pollution, earthquakes, etc. There's even a chapter on "How to Survive Women's Liberation in L.A."!
