[minimal handling wear; clean inside and out]. (B&W photographs) The author was born in Leipzig, Germany, and grew up in a fairly privileged milieu (he describes his family as being of the "higher bourgeoisie"). The memories chonicled in this small book (62 pages) are largely of his school days in Leipzig, Cologne, and later as a fellow at the University of Rochester (N.Y.), as well as various travels around the world. Although there is no overt homosexual content, the author dwells quite often on a number of strong bonds that he formed with various other (male) students, and notes as well that his adolescent relationship with his father was difficult (there is reference to regular canings for misbehavior at school). Take that for what it's worth. The subtitle is slightly inaccurate, as his reminisences actually go up to 1933, when he returned from his time at Rochester, observed the changes in the country due to the Nazi takeover, and subsequently left, not to return until after World War II. There is relatively little about Nazi Germany per se, although he does relate an anecdote about seeing Hitler at a college rally at Leipzig, prior to his rise to power. He also recounts having been present at the world premiere in Leipzig of the Brecht/Weill opera "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny," and witnessing the Nazi-inspired riot that followed. Various letters from some of his male friends are included, as well as some bits of poetry (including his own).
