Sumptuous illustration composed by Gustave Dore. One of Dore's rarest books but undoubtedly also one of the most successful. Magnificent edition of Dante's Inferno (first part of the Divine Comedy, illustrated with 75 full-page plates by Gustave Dore engraved on wood. Copy nicely established in publisher's binding, full red percaline with beautiful gilt title on the first and back, frames with bold and fine fillets. Apart from slight traces of handling on the boards, binding in excellent condition, bright gilding. Scattered freckles. Beautiful prints of the plates. "Dante's Inferno was cut out for him [Gustave Dore]. Heads still half-emerged, flesh mixed with corpses. The ballet of Love and Death entwined is his universe. And his characters have often hollow cheeks like Pasolini. Look at the little space he gives to the sky in his paintings. Hope requires real faith. something outrageous lingers on the faces of his characters A trace of irony to preserve us (see Andre Balbo, May 8, 2014). Dore's Illustrated Hell was originally published in 1861.
