Introduction by Martin Kemp. --- Leonardo in Milan and the Portrait of Bianca Sforza. --- Not too long ago this portrait drawing was auctioned off for a few thousand dollars as an untitled piece of art from the 19th century. Lightning struck when Leonardo expert Martin Kemp attributed La Bella Principessa to Leonardo da Vinci, which resulted in an outrageous hike in value and shook up the entire art world. Based upon this Leonardo portrait of Bianca Sforza on the occasion of her wedding to Galeazzo Sanseverino, drawn in 1496, the book La Bella Svelata enters the world of Renaissance Courts and their most prestigious figures who had enlivened them. Clothing, hairstyles and cosmetics are formidable keys to fully access this world. The tools of seduction implemented by the feminine universe, the language "spoken" by dresses and by the Courts' symbols of power and authority, are here invariably combined in an all-female way. Leonardo La Bella Svelata is an outstanding volume, which enables us to experience the pleasure of travellng inside the Renaissance by enjoying a fully new and enchanting charm. Protagonist of the volume is La Bella Principessa; a Leonardos artwork on parchment here unveiled by the most complete deepening on the clothes and hairstyle of the young painted lady. The study on the costume of the ladies of Italian and European courts by Elisabetta Gnignera, a specialist in the History of Medieval and Renaissance Italian Dress and author of many vestimentary essay, is a fascinating journey into the Renaissance costume. The volume also presents the important contribution by Martin Kemp, Emeritus Professor of the History of Art at the Oxford University and Member of British Academy.
