Hardcover, small quarto, 259pp., monochrome and colour plates throughout. Minor wear to board and dustwrapper edges; otherwise near fine in like dustwrapper professionally protected by superior non-adhesive polypropylene film. Salvator Rosa painted some of the most memorable landscapes in a century that excelled in depicting the countryside. His threatening rocks and storm-shattered pines epitomise the Sublime, in contrast to Claude's golden sunsets. However, in his own eyes, his historical paintings which include thrilling scenes of violence and tragedy were more important. His wayward temperament and furious insistence on the independence of the artist made relations with patrons difficult, but despite this, he made an international reputation for himself. As a musician, comic actor, poet and prolific letter writer he was more than just a great artist. This monograph goes a long way to establishing the definitive study of this neglected genius, setting his life and art against the background of the remarkable activity of seventeenth-century Italy. An elegant book filled with b/w and colour reproductions.
