Original tan cloth with black titles on boards. Previous owner's name in pencil. Cover hand soil and foxing freckles on front edge. No publication date given. Maxwell was the fourth son of prominent novelist Mary Elizabeth Braddon, and became one himself. Apparently an aristocratic momma's boy, he did see three years' active duty in World War I, starting when he was past 50 ! Arthur Conan Doyle had high praise for his writing, which seemed to center on goings-on of the British upper crust. Maxwell never lost his sense of superiority through his impressive career. I could find no synopsis of this story. 348 pp.
