Foster served as Premier of New Brunswick for three years and in various other legislative roles before and after. A native of Pictou, N.S., Macdonald won a seat in the Legislature in 1897, and seven years later left it to serve in Ottawa, where his most prominent role was Minister of National Defense under King. Once he represented Canada at the League of Nations. 584 pp.
