Original red cloth lavishly illustrated in gilt on beveled boards. Front cover hand-soiled, with several small spots (See Photo). Corner tips worn through. Missing first free endpaper, otherwise good inside. Eight full-page line drawings, with several small drawings, some of which are carefully hand-colored. All edges gilt. When their mother dies, the Haviland children are challenged to accept a stepmother. Birdie, 9, is very hesitant, and is finally accepting of her only at the end. Hubs, who is younger, is less defiant and eventually pulls away from his sister. It turns out all right in the end. 191 pp.
