Original beige softcover copy of a book originally published in 1910. Minor abrasions to covers. Bottom corner of one page folded. In July, 1814, a suave young man who gave his name as Henry More Smith was charged with stealing a horse and was lodged in Kingston Jail in care of Sheriff Walter Bates. Smith escaped for two months, but was returned to custody and secured by chains and a metal collar, which he broke. Sentenced to death, he constructed a puppet show from straw and strips of clothing. Pardoned, he was shipped to Windsor, Nova Scotia, his former home.
