Original green blindstamped cloth over boards with gilt lettering. Hinges firm. Edges of covers faded, and spines darkened. 2" vertical tear in cloth along front gutter on Volume I, being held by a piece of clear tape. Cloth at top edge of spine is ragged, and missing about 1/4". Bottom edge of spine also has 1/8" tear to one corner. Cloth of spine on Volume II is detached at back gutter, and torn horizontally about halfway up. There is also a piece of cloth missing along bottom corner of spine. It was Haliburton's opinion that American democracy didn't come from the Revolution, but had been in existence since a "republic de facto" was founded in Boston in 1630. Much of the material in these books was reportedly plagiarized from another history of the United States written by Richard Hildreth. This would be a good starter set for a "Sam Slick" collector - buy this one and keep it until you can afford a better one! This two-volume set will be sent tracked and insured - expect a request for extra postage. Scarce. Volume I - 351 pp. plus 24 pgs. Ads. Volume II -372 plus 2 pgs. Ads.
