A tight clean first edition/printing, protected in a new brodart wrapper, n ot price clipped/ex library or a book of the month edition. This book helps us better understand the value systems imbedded in the rhetoric of educational reform. The lines of battle are fairly well drawn between those who argue for a "common curriculum" based on certain key ideas and books (primarily Western), such as Alan Bloom ( Closing of the American Mind , and E.D. Hirsch Jr. ( Cultural Literacy , LJ 6/1/87), and others, including Henry Giroux ( Education Under Seige , Bergin & Garvey, 1985), who see the "common curriculum" as a way to perpetuate value systems (Western, capitalist) that exclude minority views. Swirling amid this debate is a vocabulary where words are sometimes used with quite differing meaning. Literacy is a good example. Winterowd's book develops a definition of literacy linked to the acquisition and use of both written and spoken language. Especially useful are Winterowd's numerous examples, which transform sometimes complex psycholinguistic concepts into easily understood constructs.
