Paperback. Book Condition: Near Fine. Seibu Museum of Art, Seibu Tanakawa, Japan 1983. First Edition. 1st Printing. 190 pages. Nice Firm Clean copy ! Size: 4to 9.75 - 12'' tall. Schwitters' Merz Paintings call clearly to mind the issue of the relationship between the artist and the social environment, and how the two influence each other. After World War I, Schwitters stated, 'The war has ended but the world has gone to rubble and ruins. I want to collect the bits and pieces and make a new world.' For him, the social environment itself supplies art with its materials, and offers the means of generating a different aesthetic extending beyond conventions of sculpture. The notion of pulling together the ruins of the world and making something new takes on a romantic appearance in the art world. One wonders in what ways it overlaps with the Dada spirit of exerting every effort to destroy status quo thought in society to a radical extreme. Schwitters was an artist who attempted to convert the energy of destruction to creative energy and his work and career put the spirit of Dada into practice.
