Robert Milledge Charlton was born in Savannah, GA and died there at the age of 46. In that short time he was a lawyer a GA state legislator, mayor of Savannah twice, a GA Supreme Court judge, and a US senator. In 1839 he published this volume of poems, including those of a deceased brother. He also contributed largely, both in prose and verse, to the pages of the "Knickerbocker Magazine," the best known of his writings for periodicals being " Leaves from the Portfolio of a Georgia Lawyer."
