This book is in French. It is a difficult book to grade. It is full dark-brown or black leather with gilt titles on the spine which has five rolled bands. Unfortunately there is significant insect damage on the front and rear covers from some little bug that really liked leather. Oddly, the spine is untouched, so the book would look great on a shelf. All foredges are gilt and in beautiful condition. The book is square and the binding secure. The book was printed on a higher quality paper so that the interior is bright. Except that -- starting at pp. 416 and 417 there is heavy toning on each page to the end. I don't have a clue why this change occur. There are a few other pages scattered through the book that are toned. As well all pages with plates are toned; I would guess from the acidic nature of the paper in this case. There is a beautiful title page in color. Please look at the scans. The book has some excellent features and some rotten ones. ; Vol. 1; B&W Plates from Engravings and Decorations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 475 pages; Volume 1 only. I cannot find a date but it is ca. 1839. Introduction on Bossuet by M. Tissot. The front pastedown and ffep have interesting small bookplates. The first is printed "The Library, St. Charles House, Norham Gardens, Oxford" followed by a blank area which has the initials, "H. J." in pencil. The second bookplate is printed, "Ex Libris, Gul. Bern. O'Dowd." The book was from O'Dowd's personal library so there are no other library markings or indicia.
