There is a little wear to the edges and very slight foxing, much less than this scan indicates. The paper is folded to 12 by 9". opens to one sheet that's 24 by 18". This is the November 24, 1862 issue First, this is a rare Confederate newspaper, published on Turnwold Plantation near Eatonton, Georgia during the Civil War, in 1864, by J. A. Turner. Second, the typesetter for Turner on that small plantation printing press was the young Joel Chandler Harris, future famous author of Uncle Remus other tales. Harris was heavily influenced by the stories and dialect he heard from slaves on the Turner plantation. Harris quit school early to help alleviate the financial burden on his mother. In March 1862, Joseph Addison Turner, owner of Turnwold Plantation nine miles east of Eatonton, hired Harris to work as a printer's devil for his newspaper The Countryman. Harris worked for clothing, room, and board. The newspaper reached subscribers throughout the Confederacy during the American Civil War and became one of the larger newspapers in the South with a circulation of about 2,000. Harris learned to set type for the paper, and Turner allowed him to publish his own poems, book reviews, and humorous paragraphs. Scarce Civil War/Confederate item with connection to Joel Chandler Harris. ; No. 9; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 16 pages
