Brown cloth with somewhat faded black titles and illustration. Gilt title on spine. Book has some edge and corner wear but is square and securely bound. Some tearing of endpapers along front hinge that does not affect the binding. On the back endpaper there is some scrawled writing and large initials in white ink. ; B&W Illustrations; 12mo 7" - 7" tall; 451 pages; Book is basically a love story set along the Connecticut River, but there are a couple of interesting variations. One chapter, entitled "The Negro Wedding," is an account of the protagonist attending a "jubilee" wedding of former slaves, and African-American characters and dialect appear throughout the book, including in a chapter entitled "Bloody N----r," which opens with an African-American man bleeding after a fight. Unusual for these accounts of the life of freedmen in the Northeast.
