One leaf, printed both sides and folded. 6 1/2" x 4 1/4." Illustrated with a portrait engraving of Haverly and decorative border. Three horizontal creases, probably from being put into a pocket, along with mild aging. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 4 pages; Programbooklet for a show given by J. H. Haverly's New Orleans Minstrels. Haverly acquired the New Orleans Minstrels in 1876, and this program references the 1881 New Orleans Minstrels Songster. Haverly stopped putting on shows in 1900. Program exalts the reputation of Haverly as "the greatest Minstrel Manager of the age." Highlights include three plays: "Drawing-Room Reception," "The Skidmore Guards" and "The Darkies' Strategem!" along with "Packard Police 999." Also lists "Unique Military Movements," "Terrific Hand to Hand Encounter" and actor Jas. M. Brown, "The Great Living Female Impersonator, in Burlesque Imitations of Operatic Celebrities." Haverly was one of the earliest and greatest entrepreneurs of minstrel shows. He had at least one show that feature African-American singers and actors. The importance of minstrelsy in the development of blues, jazz and country music is often downplayed or ignored.
