Joanne Little is a Black woman whose trial for the 1974murder of Clarence Alligood, a white prison guard at the Beaufort County jail in Washington, NC became a major focus of the civil rights, feminist, and anti-death penalty movements. Little was the first woman in United States history to be acquitted using the defense that she used deadly force to resist sexual assault. Her case also has become classic in legal circles as a pioneering instance of the application of scientific jury selection. Julian Bond and the Southern Poverty Law Center became involved in her case and this is a letter from Bond asking for donations toward her defense fund. The three page letter and envelope have some damage and toning especially to the top several inches, but the signature in blue ink is sharp and undamaged. The letter did result in a $3 donation, as noted on the front. Also included is a newspaper article from the New York Times, December 1, 1974.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 3 pages; Signed by Notable Personage, Unrelated
