Harold Courland was a novelist, folklorist, musicologist and anthropologist, who is also remembered for having successfully sued Alex Haley for using language and passages from Courlander's novel The African in Roots. This novel is a collection of tales told by Richard Creeks, a character portrayed as a wandering Negro minstrel in the South from Georgia to the Mississipi, observing his "big old world" and facing crises with the cunning of his folk hero, Brer Rabbit.
