The final novel by Charles Dickens is a murder mystery, first published in installments in 1870. It was not complete at the time of the author's death, however his manuscripts contained readable erasures which tended to indicate that the author was unwilling to tip off the reader about the eventual outcome. In this Heritage Press reprint edition, those erasures have been added and indicated with underlinings. With color and b&w illustrations at chapter heads by Everett Shinn; edited and with a prefatory note & introduction by Vincent Starrett. Also with appendix containing the original Charles Collins cover design and a couple of sketch maps. Sandglass leaflet is not present. --- In full pale grey cloth-covered boards w/maroon decorations on covers & spine, gilt title oval on spine, and maroon topstain. Possibly published c.1950s-70s, though 1941 date appears in book. Volume wrapped in maroon paper-covered slipcase. --- Overall, volume is in sound condition: clean and bright but with prior owner's signature to front free endpaper and slightly darkened spine. Slipcase with sunning to edges near opening and mild soiling, but remains structurally sturdy.; Octavo (8 to 9 in. tall); xxxi, 263 pages
