This book is written as two series of letters to the public, one series published in the New York Tribune and the other in the Franklin Repository. Colonel J.X. Beidler, Judge L.P. Williston, Colonel Geo. L. Shoup, Colonel Neil Howie and Colonel Wilbur L. Sanders, whose faces appear on the frontispiece are encountered by McClure on his travels.
