There is some evidence that it was imported from India in the second half of the first century A.D. It was reported that in A.D. 839 the Prime Minister of the Tang dynasty (618-907) added two extra pieces called 'cannon' to the game. By the end of the 11th century, the game had evolved into the form that exists today."
