Op 8 maart 1942 besloot Bert Garthoff de uitzendingen van de NIROM via een noodzender te Bandoeng met de dramatische worden: "Wij sluiten nu. Vaarwel, tot betere Tijden. Leve de Kningin!" Diezelfde dag vond in een onderofficierswoning op het door de Japanners veroverde, vliegveld Kalidjati, 50 km ten noorden van Bandoeng, een ontmoeting plaats tussen de laatste G.G. van Nederlands-Indi en de Japanse Lt General, welke een keerpunt betekende in de geschiedenis van dit grote eilandenrijk, dat meer dan drie eeuwen met Nederland verbonden was geweest."
