Boards show light shelf wear. Previous owner's name in ink on FFEP. Some light pencil underlining of text ; A tight solid book, hinges intact.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 438 pages; "Originally published in 1925, this textbook was written by then professor of American history at Ohio State University, Homer C. Hockett, who wrote in the preface: Whosoever by literary art can lend new charm to a twicetold tale has no need of other excuse for telling it. He who essays the oft-repeated story of our country must needs use art to win the praise of those who already know it well. but the writer of a textbook, whose primary purpose is didactic, may be pardoned for dismissing the initiated reader from his thought and centering it upon the student who looks to the text as a book of facts and interpretation rather than as a source of literary entertainment. An accurate, impartial, and clearly-stated summary of the findings of the scholars must be his aim. If these be set forth with skill enough to entice the student into more intimate acquaintance with his country's story, it is well."
