It was developed in the 1930s but in 1957, Chief Joe Mathias, the 71 year old leader of the Squamish nation named some of the holes on the golf course. Hole #1 was named Hathstauwk meaning 'beautiful view'. Mathias was a descendant of the chief for whom the golf course was named - Joe Capilano.
