Hardcover in the scarce DJ, First American Edition (undated) 1939 The John Day Company 383 pages. Very Good+, in a VG DJ. Just a touch of shelf/edge wear and dust soiling to bright yellow cloth boards with black titles - corners sharp. Top edge stained blue. Moderate shelf/edge wear, minor rubbing and chipping to scarce and fragile gold foil DJ - now in mylar. Two small closed tears to rear panel. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean and crisp. With one map and 31 vintage full-page B&W plates which includes the frontispiece. Unique book on Chinese Big Game Hunting written by a professor of Shakespeare and English Drama in the 17th century at a Chinese College (Tsing Hua College) during the Second Sino-Japanese War. Written honestly and humanely (recounting the game that got away) and as a result, the book is entirely captivating. The author even quips - The failures are so numerous that I should have entitled the book Wild Beasts I Have Missed in North China. Sporting weapons come in for some lively discussion also. The author's father having been a connoisseur and collector of firearms, which is a rare accomplishment in China all by itself. Lest you think that this is all sportsmen and marksmen, it isn't. There is much here also for the general reader that is most satisfying. Many glimpses of the Chinese people and places with captivating philosophical random thoughts delivered with the author's keen mental marksmanship. What this author delivers is a rare and insightful book. There is a distinct scarcity of books on hunting in China. OK. Fine. Even so, this may be one of the ten best books on hunting Big Game ever written. And especially hunting in the last days of the Republic of China under Chiang Kai-shek before the Communists came to power in 1949. Highly recommended.Handsome vintage copy in the scarce DJ.
