Hardcover with the scarce DJ and related ephemera, First Edition 1924 Houghton Mifflin Company 270 pages. Very Good+, in a Good+ DJ. Minor shelf/edge wear to brown and orange decorative cloth boards with Orange spine titles - one tiny bumped corner. Moderate shelf/edge wear, soiling and stains (rear panel and spine) to original unclipped DJ - now in mylar. No previous owner markings - all pages are clean and unmarked. Only flaw is the title page and the page facing it are darkened by a long and detailed news article/obituary pertaining to the author laid in. From the front panel of the DJ: For fourteen years Miss Mackenzie lived among the Bantu tribes of West Africa. In this book she shows the African as he really is and transcribes some of the strange and fascinating sayings about beauty, death, marriage, the things of laughter, and the things of God that are current in that twilit forest world. The result is an interpretation of the native mind and soul comparable in its vividness and beauty to Hearn's studies of the Japanese. Jean Kenyon Mackenzie (January 6, 1874 September 2, 1936) was an American writer and Presbyterian missionary in West Africa. Mackenzie was a missionary teacher in West Africa from 1904 to 1914, under the auspices of the Board of Foreign Missions of the Presbyterian Church (USA). She was based in Lolodorf and Efoulan in German-occupied Kamerun, and at Baraka Station in French-occupied Gabon. She retired from the mission field for health reasons in 1914, but returned to Cameroon during World War I, as a diplomat working with missionaries, the Bulu people, and the French government. A very handsome First Edition with the scarce but flawed DJ and related ephemera.LOC SSS-20
