Vintage Hardcover, 1896 Lee and Shepard 171 pages, 19 unnumbered pages, 5 unnumbered leaves of plates. Very Good, no DJ. Minor shelf/edge wear to embossed blue cloth boards with silver titles - corners have tiny bumps. Dedication to previous owner on inside front cover (dated 1905) - all other pages are clean and unmarked. Rebecca Sophia Clarke (born Feb. 22, 1833, Norridgewock, Maine, U.S.died Aug. 16, 1906, Norridgewock) was an American writer of childrens literature whose spirited writing found great success with its audience through humour, empathy, and a refusal to sermonize. Between 1860 and 1903, she wrote 45 books. Clarke was called "the Dickens of the nursery". The children in her books were often naughty and uninhibited. She was one of the first authors to write stories for children that depicted them realistically with all their humor, imagination and mischievousness, unlike the impossibly perfect children of previous fiction. A very handsome vintage copy. OCLC# 2956869. LOC SSS-09
