The first campaign medaL of the Great War - the 1914 Star - was struck in 1917. In October 1919, by command of the King, a bar bearing the dates ' 5th Aug,-22nd Nov. 1914' was awarded to all holders of the medal who had been under fire - i.e., ' within range of enemy mobile artillery' - in France and Flanders between the qualifying dates. Fewer than 230,000 bars were awarded. The recipients - and only they - were and are the Old Contemptibles. Their very special medal has come to be known, by hallowed tradition, as the ' Mons Star'; and this is their story. There is a small bump to the top corner on the blue boards which are crisp and clean. The dust jacket shows very light wear to the corners and is priced-clipped.
