Hardcover with no dust jacket. SIGNED and INSCRIBED by author (signed first name only - "Jack"). Inscription is dated 1948. Appears to be 1st Edition (NAP) . Couple corner tips are lightly worn. Spine extremeties are lightly rubbed, with just a bit of wear at the spine head. Spine twist. Very slight rubbing to boards and a 1/4" strip across the front board top edge is slightly faded. Gilt is nice and bright. Dust freckling to page tops. Long pencil notation on front past-down pointing out that Vilas made the first airplane flight across Lake Michigan in 1913 (10 years after Kitty Hawk. ) He made the flight by dead reckoning and was out of sight of land for most of it. Vilas was commissioned as the "official aviator" of the Wisconsin State Forestry Board In 1915. He patrolled northern Wisconsin looking for forest fires.
