Hardcover; no dustjacket. Brown cloth, with gilt lettering and decoration. Illustrated with many B&W plates. The spine is sunned, and there is some age-darkening to the board cloth. The spine gilt is dull, but readable; gilt on the front board is fairly bright. Some wear, bumping at the corner tips and spine extremities. Some rubbing at the board edges. The hinges are split. Pages ix through 6 (and the plate following page 6) are detached, but present. The fore-edge of page ix is edgeworn. Pages are a bit age-darkened. Some foxing on some of the plates; but almost exclusively in the margins.
