Sans lieu [New York and Paris], March 1939. Poem by Stephen Spender, translation in French by Louis Aragon.
Stephen Spender's poem "Fall of a city" is followed by its French translation by Louis Aragon "Chute d'une cit"; both poem and translation are signed by Spencer and Aragon in pencil. A remarkable album of 9 original engravings by John Buckland-Wright, Stanley William Hayter, Josef Hecht, Dalla Husband, Wassily Kandinsky, Roderick Mead, Joan Mir, Dolf Rieser and Luis Vargas, all signed in pencil by the artists. An additional etching by Hayter that integrates the word Fraternity on an abstract line-drawing, is mounted on the album's hard folder cover at the center of it.
First edition. Limited in 113 numbered copies on Montval hand-made paper printed on March 1, 1939, by Gonzalo More, Atelier 17 and Henri Hecht for the engravings. This copy is numbered H and is one of the 12 copies reserved for collaborators numbered A to L. In additions there are 100 copies numbered up to 101, and a single issue contained drawings and engravings.
The Fraternity album was intended to raise funds to support the needs of the orphans of the Spanish Civil War. The poet Stephen Spender had fought in Spain with the International Brigades.
