First edition of this extremely rare reference work on chimney plaques from various collections and museums. Limited edition of 225 numbered copies on papier du Marais, this one no. 206. WE CAN SEND MORE PHOTOS ON REQUEST! The title reads Tome premier, but a 2nd volume was never published. Extensive iconography, 1,290 chimney plaques reproduced with descriptive notes for each. Contains, sorted by design topic of the plaques: History of the plates - Old Testament - New Testament - Decorations, Allegories, Miscellaneous - Arms of France - Determined Coat of Arms - Mythology - History. Bound in navy blue half-basane, smooth spine decorated, title and author in gilt. First cover preserved. A very fine copy in excellent condition, binding impeccable, interior idem. Original covers bound in. FIREPLACE PLATES: Traditionally, the fire-plate protects the back of the chimney as a heat shield from chipping and cracking. In addition, the cast iron fire-plate absorbs heat (which would otherwise be lost) and returns it to the room. Thus, a cast iron fire-plate acts as a radiator and can therefore increase the efficiency of the fireplace by 50%. In addition, the fire-plate also has a decorative function in the fireplace, near the stove, in the kitchen as a backsplash or as a work of art on the wall.
