The book is an oral history transcript of tape recorded interviews with 5 Bay Area fine bookbinders: Lee Wollenberg, Stell Patri, Duncan Olmstead, Stephan Gale Herrick, and Barbara Fallon Hiller. Each interview was held question-and-answer style and these preeminent bookbinders expounded on their training, teachers and mentors; careers as binders and restorers; the art and the craft; how each brings out the best in a book through binding; and their opinions of other bookbinders. These people spoke freely and frankly about their work and the craft. Being unedited, the text is chatty, immediate, and quite personal.
