There is a letter laid in from the author to the previous owner, who was a V-12 trainee, expressing the author's appreciation for him agreeing to review the bound galleys of this book. There is also a flyer and registration form laid in for the 50th Anniversary naV-12y reunion, held in Norfolk, Virginia November 3-7, 1993.
The author was a V-12 trainee towards the end of WWII who was also recalled to active duty during the Korean War.
Preface, appendix with a description of each of the 131 V-12 schools, notes, bibliography, and index. Numerous b/w photos throughout the book. ; 7 " - 9 " Tall; 596 pages; "As [WWII] went into full swing, the Navy and Marine Corps needed tens of thousands of officers to man the ships, fly the planes, and command the troops. To ensure a constant supply of well-trained, intelligent officers, the Navy initiated a training program at colleges and universities across the nation.
" Under the careful guidance of Lieutenant Commander Arthur Stanton Adams, the Navy V-12 program was a model of military-civilian cooperation. In a time of radical decline in college enrollment because of military enlistment and the draft, the program kept a number of small colleges afloat and provided a college education for many young men who otherwise could not have afforded it.
" The trainees were men who were already in college in various reserve programs, enlisted men from the fleet, and high school seniors who passed the nationwide qualifying examination. All had to meet the strict physical and mental requirements of the program. Blacks were admitted years before the official integration of the armed forces.
" The book includes photographs and facts from each of the 131 V-12 schools and follows the careers of hundreds of V-12s into the top echelon of American leadership in the postwar era." ; Signed by Author
