A Modern Library edition of the 1902 novel by Henry James. The story is centered around a wealthy young American heiress who takes ill, and those who purport to help her, some genuinely; some not. With a preface by the author. --- In Toledano spine 8 / green cloth / gilt titling on black spine & cover blocks / grey Kent endpapers / jacket style h, verso lists titles in ML catalog, but total number not visible. Likely published c.1944-53 (though 1937 date appears in book). ML #244.1. --- This book has been exposed to dampness, resulting in dampstains to cloth and slightly rippled leaves, along with some foxing to textblock edges, otherwise a tightly-bound, sound copy. Unclipped dust jacket ($1.25) with no shortage of holes (especially to back panel), likely the result of starch-eating silverfish, but mostly intact and wrapped in removable archival mylar protector. Note: This item is damaged and is priced accordingly. ; 12mo (7 to 7-1/2 in. tall); xxx, 329, 439 pages
