A Modern Library Giant reprint edition offering 24 stories by Thomas Mann (1875-1955). Includes the author's "Felix Krull" and "Death in Venice" among others. The German author often wrote highly symbolic stories that explored psychological themes. Stories translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter, with a list of principal writings by the author at rear of volume and a preface by the author. Mann was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1929. Volume is wrapped in jacket with black & white photographic portrait of the author to cover. --- In Toledano spine G5 / grey cloth / gilt titling & ML torchbearer oval on black cover & spine blocks / blank GA style endpapers / jacket style Gf, verso advertises titles in ML catalog, but with no total number. Likely published c.1964 (though 1936 date appears in book. ML #G84.1. --- Apparently once the property of a US Navy ship's library, with faded rubberstamping to textblock top edge and 'MAN' written in ink on jacket spine, else a sound, well-preserved copy.
