After his untimely death in 1931 at age 48 in a New Mexico auto accident, legal scholar and attorney Austin Tappan Wright left behind lengthy manuscripts of this novel and related writings. The novel was organized and edited by his widow Margaret and daughter Sylvia and eventually published in 1942 by Farrar & Rinehart. --- This is the story of an intricately-organized society in the imagined nation of Islandia, situated somewhere in the Southern Hemisphere. The people of Islandia, per Wright, had established a rule (among many others), limiting outside visitors to one hundred at any one time, so as to preserve the unique ethos of the country. A life-long project for the author, he also concocted an elaborate history of Islandia, with genealogies, glossary of the Islandian language and other well-organized data. This classic, often compared to J. R. R. Tolkien's writings, is an entry in publishers' 'Utopian Literature' series. Includes a fold-out 30 cm. x 24 cm. map of Islandia by Robert Graves, and an introduction by Leonard Bacon. --- A 1971 reprint edition of the original 1942 issuance. In full mustard cloth-covered boards with simple cover and spine titling in brown. Volume lacks a dust jacket, likely as issued. --- A well-preserved, tightly-bound and unmarked copy, though with retailer's sticker to front paste-down, dampstains to last few leaves and small creases to corners of some leaves.
